SOUTH DAKOTA CHRISTIAN HISTORY: The pastor who hosted church revival in state capitol building in Yankton, SD (then territory capital), wrote SD’s constitution and coined the state motto: “Under God the People Rule” – Dr. Joseph Ward (1838 -1889), of puritan New England and New York; and Congregational pastor, founder of Dakota’s first college-Yankton College, arguably one of the wisest, smartest men at that time.
